Civic Engagement: Democracy Only Works If We Do
A healthy democracy depends on active participation. When people get involved—whether it’s volunteering, voting, serving on a local board, or organizing a community event—we all benefit. Civic engagement doesn’t just strengthen Bristol; it gives each of us a sense of purpose and connection to our neighbors.
But right now, too many barriers discourage everyday people from getting involved. That needs to change.
We believe in creating a culture of participation—one where every voice is heard, and every resident has a seat at the table. Policies at both the state and local level must do more to encourage and empower civic engagement, especially for those who have historically been left out of decision-making.
This means:
- Partnering with local schools to create community-wide events that teach and inspire civic responsibility
- Opening up more opportunities for residents to serve on boards, committees, and task forces
- Making public meetings more accessible—in person and online—so everyone has a chance to speak up and be heard
We’re building a Bristol where civic engagement isn’t just encouraged—it’s expected. Because democracy only works if we all show up.
